Program Description:

Lehigh University  Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)
Spring 2024 English 5, Section 16
 

In spring 2024, Lehigh University and Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) in Quito, Ecuador will partner for eight weeks in a multilingual, multicultural composition course to collaborate synchronously and asynchronously.   ENGL005, Section 16 satisfies the first year composition requirement for English 2 and English 5 students. COIL students will research and compose multimodal essays in various genres with a social justice focus on issues related to gender and identity. In this multilingual, multicultural composition course Lehigh and USFQ students will collaborate synchronously and asynchronously.  COIL students have a unique opportunity to gain a multicultural perspective through firsthand travel and writing experiences during spring break, March 12-18, 2023. Lehigh students will travel to USFQ to visit local sites and organizations to raise awareness about gender and problems associated with culturally defined gender roles and identities.

In addition to the composition course outcomes, COIL students will:
  • Engage in active learning and teamwork
  • Augment their cross-cultural awareness and understanding
  • Identify similarities and differences in cultural perspectives related to various social issues
  • Utilize intercultural communication skills to achieve shared outcomes
COIL provides students opportunities to:
  • Gain intercultural awareness and competence
  • Enhance intercultural and interpersonal communication skills
  • Add an important international experience to their resumes
  • Improve digital literacy skills
  • Prepare to work in virtual environments (a marketable skill)
  • Learn diverse approaches to problem solving and negotiation skills
 

ELIGIBILITY

To participate in a study abroad experience, students must be in good academic standing, good disciplinary standing, and good financial standing with the bursar’s office.  Must have passed or received credit (transfer or AP) for ENG 001 or ENG 003.

Sunday, March 10 - Saturday, March 16, 2024

 

PROGRAM COST

$2,500 plus a $50 confirmation fee.

What’s Included

  • Roundtrip airfare to/from Ecuador

  • Transportation to/from both airports in USA and Ecuador

  • Shared hotel rooms with bathroom

  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. No meals provided on travel days as well as one weeknight dinner

  • All program activities in the above itinerary

  • What’s NOT included: Souvenirs, meals not covered in itinerary (1 dinner and meals on travel days), checked luggage for flight,  personal items, $50 confirmation fee
     

FUNDING

College of Health: The application for CoH students will open on Oct. 30th and close on Nov. 10th.
Passport to Success grant: Available to students who have participated in passport to success (this year or any previous year).

A group flight is booked by Lehigh for all participants.
Group flight organized by Lehigh and booked for all students by Lehigh.
Group transportation provided to/from Lehigh to Philadelphia.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

A Visa may be required; all international students will receive a separate email regarding visa requirements. Cost of visa is the student responsibility; Student Opportunity Fund may be able to provide assistance for these costs. 

If you are an international student with an I-20 from Lehigh University, please be sure to speak with the Office of International Students & Scholars (OISS) in order to ensure that your I-20 documentation is in order so that you can get back into the United States.
